In Germany every person consumes about 3 kg strawberries per year.
What to do if you cannot abstain strawberries in wintertime? And why are strawberries becoming rotten so fast? What do you think, is it really necessary to have every fruit at every time of the year?
The comparison in the picture should activate your consciousness. And our goal is that next Christmas time some people who think about baking a strawberry cake think twice and bake an orange cake instead.
Imagine it is deep winter and someone has the desire to eat some red and sweet strawberries. At the homepage of “FORUMGesundheit“ you can read, how most of the people in Austria would react. They would salve their conscience with buying regional berries. But this is even worse. Because in winter time regional strawberries grow in forcing houses and the heating produces more CO2 then the imports of fruits form Egypt.1 Also the taste of strawberries in winter is not the same as when they rise in the hot summer sun, so the best way in wintertime would be not to buy fresh but sun-dried strawberries.
But also in summer the transport of strawberries is very challenging because of their bad habit to rot very fast. Another problem is that strawberries would not mellow after harvesting, as we know, in the case of green bananas which you can harvest when they are green and after a time they get their yellow color. So a regional grown strawberry has a shorter way of distribution and because of this the farmers can harvest them later. The result: a better, sweeter and more intensive taste. In addition to this, with buying local products you support the local farmers and long distribution ways would be historical. 2
Just to add some facts, the worldwide biggest producer of strawberries are the United States with more then 27% followed by Spain, Poland, Japan, Russia and Korea. 3
The unknown pros of strawberrys are, for example, that a strawberry implies more vitamin C than a lemon. Furthermore to this, they also include vitamin B1, B2 and a lot more.
If you now may have the idea, to simply plant your own strawberries, you just have to dry one strawberry (better more) in the sun. After about a week, when the seeds are dry, you can use a bit water to peel the seeds off the strawberry skin. Then you can easily plant the seeds and watch them grow. Self-made always tastes better! And sun-dried strawberries also tase in winter.
